Paul Edgecomb, a death row corrections officer during the Great Depression, witnesses supernatural events after the arrival of John Coffey, a Black man convicted of a brutal crime who possesses an extraordinary healing gift. As Paul comes to doubt Coffey's guilt, he must reconcile the man's power with the machinery of justice set against him.
