Told in flashback from an asylum, aging composer Antonio Salieri recounts his obsessive rivalry with the young, boorish, and undeniably brilliant Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As Salieri's envy curdles into a scheme against the man he considers touched by God, the film becomes a meditation on genius, mediocrity, and faith.
